Man, now I want to go to Boston. The MFA has so many amazing objects; it’s really one of the best museums I’ve been to (and not only for American art, but also musical instruments and European things from all periods).
This is a show saddle from 15th-century Germany that’s made out of bone, of all things. Must have been difficult to stay seated on, but it sure looks nice (which I guess is the point). The main motif is that of St. George and the Dragon, which is significant since this was a gift from the Germanic emperor of the time to the newly inducted members of the knights of the Order of the Dragon. And, of course, it features a moralizing phrase that roughly translates to “‘Look before you leap’” (along the bottom left edge in the picture). Check out more on their website.
